Imagine street lights that are self-constructing, self-repairing, self-replicating, solar-powered, and carbon-negative because theyβre just bioluminescent trees
Imagine fibrous plants that grow super-strong spider silk. Plants that grow as fast as bamboo but as strong as steel
Imagine medicine coming in fruit instead of pills. Oh you want to transition? Here, take this HRT shrub. Put it on your windowsill, water it daily and throw some compost at it every once in a while, and eat one berry per day
Imagine crops that are more nutritious, disease- and pest-resistant, and grow in harsher climates and soil conditions, helping to provide more reliable food to impoverished peoples with no downside whatsoever oh wait we already have those donβt we
We canβt have rad forest cities full of dope biotech if weβre too scared to let people do the research thatβll lead to that. Science has spoken: the fear is unjustified, and GMOs are safe. Letβs embrace them!
From now on? I thought we already were! π¬
So hereβs an interesting little bit of biotech thatβs being worked on to help combat food insecurityβ¦Β
Errr, first off, a little background? Plants have three different types of photosynthesis, based on the biochemical pathways the plant uses to capture COβ and make sugars for energy. The most common one is C3 photosynthesis, and itβs used in because itβs very old. This kind of photosynthesis probably evolved sometime in the mesozoic era, back when there were still dinosaurs wandering around.
Another type is C4 photosynthesis, which is a more recently evolved pathway. C4 carbon fixation is a lot more efficient, provides plants with more energy, and captures moreΒ COβ. It evolved in environments with lots of light, so itβs common in warm parts of the world. In fact, C4 photosynthesis is so efficient that even though only about 5% of plants use it, they account for about 23% of the carbon fixation of all terrestrial plants!
C4 also the pathway used by sugarcane, which is what gives sugarcane one of the highest photosynthetic efficiencies of any plant. Itβs also the pathway used by maize (corn) and sorghum (a popular grain in parts of Africa).
Anyway, that brings me to the genetic modification part.
The modified rice would theoretically be able to give higher crop yields, and do so using fewer nutrients and resources. As an added bonus, it would also help remove excess COβ from the atmosphere. The efforts are being coordinated by the International Rice Research Institute, whoβve received millions of dollars in donations towards the project β theyβre the same organisation behind the golden rice project which was about making rice more nutritious for people affected by food scarcity.
Anyway tl;dr science is cool, genetic modification is a good thing, and it can be used to help end world hunger.
Hereβs your friendly reminder that genetic modification isnβt inherently bad – itβs a tool, and like any other tool can be used in good or bad ways. MONSANTO is bad. GMOs are not.
Honestly, IMO weβd have a million times less problems if we just didnβt let people patent organisms. Who decided that was okay, anyhow?
βwhy canβt female heroes kick arse in heelsβ because itβs not practical and will literally snap your damn ankle you can scream weaponised femininity all you want but first off, you need to admit that theyβre not an almighty symbol of empowerment, and secondly that if you do a job with a lot of physical activity in heels youβre risking your own safety. all these women fighting in heels on tv are going to end up seriously injuring themselves.Β
weaponised femininity is a concept made up in an attempt to get us to embrace the industries created to hold us back/profit from our insecurities so that we can continue to fit into the male expectation of what a woman should be and not question why we are forced to spend thousands on our appearance every year
just a small anecdote. I had a friend who worked in theater; she was the stage manager and an actress came to her in tears one day because the director absolutely refused to let her do a choreographed fight scene in less than 3 inch heels because βtheyβre platforms so youβll be okay.β My friend, who is a womanβs size 10, brought her own heels in the next day and DEMANDED the director put them on and try the choreography before the actress did it. He finally agreed to change it, without putting the heels on.
so like I know you might think of βall those women on tv fighting in heelsβ as fictional woman who WOULD hurt themselves in real life, but its fiction so its okayβ¦except those women are portrayed by real actresses who are actually fighting in actual heels, being directed by dudes who have never worn a pair of heels in their lives, alongside men who arenβt expected to constantly wear things that make their stunts 2x more dangerous than they have to be. Just a thought.
Men takeΒ βletβs see feminine women being badassβ to meanΒ βletβs see women impractically focused on their appearance in combat situations.β
Thatβs why I loved Black Panther even more Nakia took off her heels and used them as weapons and was running and driving around barefoot in that one scene
A number of stuntwomen have spoken out about getting injured on sets because the character is wearing heels and skimpy clothing that provide no protection or padding. It literally harms rl women.
The only way I wanna see a women fight with heels is if she takes them off and fights with them a la Mulan/Nakia style.
sorry i canβt hear the noise of male entitlement over the sound ofΒ Evangeline Lilly and every other woman sighing in frustration
They photoshopped the heels onto wonder woman. Not even Gal Gadot could fight in them, but it was so important to The Lookβ’ that they frame by frame added them. Gal wore flats to the red carpet in protest.
WHEDON HOW CAN YOU SAY HE HAS AN EGO DO YOU NOT SEE THIS SHIT. DO YOU NOT SEE HIM LOOKING PHYSICALLY UNCOMFORTABLE BECAUSE OF THE CAMERA DO YOU NOT SEE THE REST OF THE COMMANDOS NOT GIVING TWO SHITS ABOUT THE CAMERA BECAUSE THEY HAVE BIGGER THINGS TO THINK ABOUT AND STEVE IS THERE THINKING βSHIT SHIT DONβT LOOK AT ME DONβT TRACK ME I DONβT WANT TO BE THE ARMYβS DANCING MONKEY I WANT TO DO SOME GOOD, QUIT FOLLOWING MEβ
βA MATCH OF EGOSβ WITH TONY STARK WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL
Bohemian Rhapsody. We Will Rock You. Somebody To Love. All hit singles, and all the direct product of a band that was formed when an astrophysicist and a dentistry major found a new friend in an art college, who then went on to recruit a fourth member from the electronics school. Based on this alliance I propose the rift in society between Arts and STEM students was fabricated to keep us separated so as to dilute our true power – and fabricated by who, you may ask? The business major, the only member of society who reaps no reward from art and science and thus must weaken us so as to stay ahead. In this essay I will
