look…………….. write as much shitty fic as you want. nobody can stop you. you’re learning constantly and it’s better to write hackneyed implausible ridiculousness than it is to not write at all out of fear of fucking up. you’re good
There was an experiment a professor did. I think it was pottery students. He did an experiment of “quality” vs “quantity”. One half of the class he told; you have to make as many pots as possible. Good pots, bad pots, shitty pots, whatever. The more pots you make, the higher your grade.
The other half of the class were told, “you can make only one pot”. But that pot had to be perfect. The quality had to be high; the highest quality pot would get the best mark.
But when it came to the grading, they noticed something weird.
All the best quality pots were in the ‘quantity’ group.
The guys who were literally churning out pots, trying to make as many as possible, not concentrating on the quality. But every pot they made, made them better at making pots. By the end of the month (I think it was a month) – they had some pretty awesome pots coming out, because they enjoying finding all the ways and all the things they could do to make all their pots. Where as the ‘quality’ guys had spent their time reading up on pots, and technique, and researching and planning; which was all great but they’d had no further practice at actually making pots.
The best way to get really good at something, the only way to be really good at something, is to make lots of shitty attempts at that thing several of which will fail. If all you create are perfect things then you won’t improve, because how can you improve on perfect?
Me: So you remember in the ALTA finale when Aang gets slammed against a rock in JUST the right spot so his chakra is unblocked and it realigns his whole spirit & body and he is able to reach his full potential as the avatar?
For the record, she actually abandoned the movement BEFORE they all got whooping cough, but abandoned it too late. There’d been a breakout of measles in her area that caused her to reassess, and she and her doctor had already drafted and started a catch-up vaccination schedule, but her kids caught whooping cough just before it could be started. Then she wrote a blog post for The Scientific Parent explaining how she and her husband had come to wrong decisions in the first place, how they changed their mind, the consequences they suffered as a result, and asking other parents to please vaccinate their kids. And now she’s an activist for destroying the misinformation of anti-vaxxers, and reaching out to anti-vaxxers because she’s understands their fears but knows their kids deserve better.
She was trying to the best for her kids and just didn’t know how to interpret the validity of information or its sources, an actual skill that can be actually difficult and that is under-taught and a necessary first step to being able to trust vaccination research, so chose no action over taking an action she wasn’t sure of. She kept looking into it with family and friends and even eventually came to the right conclusion before her kids became sick, but it was still too late.
Honestly it was pretty brave of her to publicly admit she was wrong. She could have just quietly vaccinated her kids and not become a national news story, but instead she spoke out, even saying “I’m writing this from quarantine, the irony of which isn’t lost on me.” and also “I am not looking forward to any gloating or shame as this ‘defection’ from the antivaxx camp goes public, but, this isn’t a popularity contest. Right now my family is living the consequences of misinformation and fear. I understand that families in our community may be mad at us for putting their kids at risk.”
She understood the consequences and still put herself and her story out there.
You know what, it does take a big person to admit they were wrong so publicly and work to undo the harm. I believe I made fun of her in the past, but timemachineyeah changed my mind.
Because I’m sick to death of anyone making Team Cap’s intention during the airport battle about anything other than Cap and company trying to get to Siberia to stop five other Winter Soldiers, here’s some dialogue from the movie for ya…
STEVE: Hear me out, Tony. That doctor, the psychiatrist, he’s behind all this.
TONY: Anyway. Ross gave me 36 hours to bring you in. That was 24 hours ago. Can you help a brother out?
STEVE: You’re after the wrong guy!
TONY: Your judgment is askew. Your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday.
STEVE: And there are five more super soldiers just like him. I can’t let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can’t.
Then, later…
BUCKY: We gotta go. That guy is probably in Siberia by now.
STEVE: We gotta draw out the flyers. I’ll take Vision, you get to the jet.
SAM: No, *you* get to the jet! Both of you! The rest of us aren’t getting out of here.
CLINT: As much as I hate to admit it… if we’re going to win this one some of us might have to lose it.
SAM: This isn’t the real fight, Steve.
So anyone saying that Team Cap had any drive other than stopping five enhanced Hydra agents from being awakened by Zemo and wreaking havoc, or so they were led to believe, should probably get their ears checked.
Say it with me, folks. The airport battle was not about the Accords. At least not from Team Cap’s perspective.
This
^^^^ All of this.
Theres this common tumblr joke that Steve was allll about irrationally believing Bucky to be an angel, or inappropriately shielding him from the consequences of his actions.
When… that doesn’t happen. At all.
Steve was ready to believe Bucky could have set off that bomb, and went after him before the SWAT team got there in order to take Bucky alive and try to save SWAT lives doing it. Not because he was certain he was innocent. (He said to Nat, “If he’s this far gone, Nat, I should be the one to bring him in…”)
Steve, as you say, is motivated through the entire airport sequence to *stop the other soldiers,* the unleashing of which he fully believes is Zemo’s plan.
Steve does literally everything he can to simply stop Tony’s murderous rage, and only begins to lose his temper toward the end of the fight… a temper he relocates himself, before he goes too far.
Steve is consistently one of THE most level headed people anywhere in the film. Its the rest of the situation around him thats pitting his and Bucky’s needs against that of some of his friends. Steve’s morals around consent and authority and his position on the Accords may not line up with yours. But that doesnt mean he isnt sensibly following his own compass (and besides that, the Accords actually aren’t playing into his motivations for a surprisingly large chunk of the film. He’s got other fish to fry.) He may also have a reputation for sass and splashy actions. But that doesn’t make his motivations in CW that of a hothead.
