Artemis: *lounging by a spring on piles of deerskin surrounded by three dozen naked girls with a dead pan expression* Virginity.
âHeracles, theyâre lesbiansâ.
Note that the concept of âvirginityâ in Ancient times merely meant âunmarriedâ, and had nothing to do with sexual activity. Some priestesses were âvirginsâ because they chose (or were committed to) a life of worship, but it was merely a question of social status, not of personal choice or practice. Of course, one can suppose that this lifestyle would be rather attractive for lesbians.
So when Artemis is said to be the Goddess of Virgins, it is meant to be understood as âGoddess of Unmarried Womenâ, or, quite possibly literally, of lesbians.Â
(Itâs only Christianity that reframed the concept of virginity to mean ânever had sexâ. Many ancient religions has âVirgin goddessesâ, which symbolized feminine power, and in this case too it meant âuntied to a manâ, or âwhole for herselfâ)

it takes years to develop your craft. do not romanticize the idea of an âovernight successâ. be a student. grow organically. get really good. hate your work. start over. find new ways to express the same ideas. the student becomes the master. your time will come.
These are great items because theyâre fun for the herbivores to each, the carnivores to tear apart, and everybody to roll and throw around. Theyâre tactile, olfactory, and edible enrichment all in one!Â
I believe theyâre acceptable on-exhibit enrichment for naturalistic facilities like Brookfield in Chicago, too.Â
I think of this time of year as Tumblrâs Annual Pumpkining of the Animals Post.
The bat though!
This is the best thing!
Our local pumpkin farm gives any unsold pumpkins to the zoo!
