i know Mike and Bryan are working on the Avatar live action series. Which bodes well for it considering the bar was set incredibly low in 2010. But the continuing idea that animation is a lesser way of telling a story that and that live action remakes are “how it was meant to be seen” just don’t sit well with me.
even with the most cutting-edge CGI, you’d be able to tell when a Fire Nation airship sorely stands out or when Appa has been superimposed in a shot. Every frame of the original show is so beautiful and animation made EVERYTHING feel like this world was completely realized. To date I’d argue it’s one of the most perfect examples of a well told and contained story. Everything felt fleshed out and lived in. What does live action bring to the table that was lacking 13 years ago? I dunno, man.

Zuko’s scar is different than the typical villain’s scar bc it’s not an ambiguous sign of past violence but an explicit symbol of his father’s abuse – rather than making him seem tougher for no reason it shows that at his heart he’s just a traumatized child and not a villain at all. Okay but honestly fucking shit like this when they show Zuko’s scar side when talking about Sozin and then having the bar pass and have his non-scar side when Iroh says Roku is his great grandfather if EXACTLY the kind of shit that elevates this show to where really no other show has ever come and probably never will
I spent a good half day being boggled over the fact that Uncle Iroh from A:TLA’s title was (and probably continued to officially be, among several others) Prince Iroh. Like, no, his official title is “Uncle”. Uncle of the Fire Nation.
Just about every joke in Avatar: The Last Airbender is peak comedy but conceptually my favorite moment is that scene in The Waterbending Scroll where Zuko’s crew was fighting some pirates and Aang was lost in the middle of a smoke cloud.
Now, Aang being an Airbender, the logical thing to do would be to blow the smoke away, which he does.
This would be funny enough in and of itself, but what really gets me is that Aang just nopes his way out of the situation by… Calling the smoke back?
Like on top of this being the literal only instance of an aerokinetic character blowing smoke away in reverse (not the same thing as kicking up a cloud of dust) just… everyone who was fighting just goes back to fighting each other like that didn’t just happen? Like they didn’t just see the Avatar- who they’re fighting over- is no longer tied up?
This five seconds of animation is just the most beautifully hilarious mess.
