brooklyn nine nine is really good to us when it comes to friendships, because every character has such unique friendships and bonding scenes with the others but i dont think we talk about rosas and charles friendship enough because damn:
– we start the show with charles being heads over heels for rosa, who is clearly not interested
– rosa tells him, very clearly, that she thinks hes sweet and really likes him as a friend but shes not interested in dating him
– it takes charles some time to get over her, but he does!! apologizes for being weird and making her uncomfortable!! and they go on having an incredibly strong and close friendship!!
– at one point charles even takes a bullet for her, which could have led to the whole “just give him a chance” trope but nope b99 doesnt do that bs, they talk it out and they never end up together
– they are so close that charles even helps rosas bf to plan for her birthday because he knows her so well!! she loves it!!
– rosa asks charles to be her bridesmaid because they are so close and she knows charles would love that!! he does!!
– charles plans her the best bachelorette party and rosa absolutely loves it!! she gets so excited she literally lifts charles up from the floor??
– sometimes between working cases they go to have foot massages together?? that was so cute??
– charles helps rosa text her boyfriend?? because shes not that great at pickup lines?? how cute??
– the writers could have easily opted to go with the “less attractive man falls for his way hotter coworker whos not interested but ends up giving him a chance because he is nice (and wont stop pestering her)” trope but instead we got this beautiful beautiful brotp
1) Explicitly bi woman played by bi actress gets lady love interest, and it’s played as adorable and a little hilarious and not weird and not titillating.
2) There are zero white people in this scene and it’s so normal on this show I almost missed that fact. (The other actor in this scene is Terry Crews)
3) All sapphics are useless around pretty women: confirmed
4) Gina Rodriguez is in a hoodie and a t-shirt and some comfy jeans and cute ankle boots. Zero hyper sexualization/male gaze. Still confirmed as gorgeous and sexy.
5) Color Me Badd is playing, which is legitimately what plays in my head when *I* see a pretty girl, so thank you for hitting my demographic super hard, show.
My favorite thing about Cheddar the dog is that either Holt or Kevin named him Cheddar and I honestly don’t know which option is funnier.
third, equally funny option: his name was already cheddar when they adopted him. both of them think it’s an absurd goddamn name but neither of them know you can just change an animal’s name if you don’t like it. no one ever told them and they’re both much too proper to even conceptualize this notion on their own. the dog was named cheddar and that’s very unfortunate but cheddar he will remain.

If you like Brooklyn 99, you should read Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books, specifically the City Watch books, because they’re basically Brooklyn 99 but British, written 10-30 years ago, and set in a pseudo-medieval society that’s undergoing its industrial revolution.
There is a scene in Jingo where Sam Vimes learns of the growing nationalist tension and upcoming military action, hears one of his officers and best friends say the same casually racist things he’s said for thirty years about a brown-skinned foreigner that, by the way, he’s perfectly friendly to, calls him into his office, and says No.
This is a thing we are Not Going To Do Anymore, Fred. I know that you’ve been saying this for the last thirty years, Fred. It’s not offensive all of a sudden, Fred, it’s been offensive this whole time and I haven’t cared enough before, but it’s Time To Be Better, Fred.

This is one of my favourite pieces of this show because “Marriage is like…oatmeal” was introduced as part of the “Holt can’t do emotions” gag
But in this speach, the unusual metaphor is powerful and sincere and heartwarming. And it shows that these writers really understand the character of Holt and the nature of love, and that they are very, very good at their craft.
