I always think of, like, 2nd century scriptural debates when matters of canon come up.
General rabble: accepts bits from the movies and the books and maybe cursed child and that one fanfic they read when it crossed their dash. In general, whatever supports my ship is canon.
Proto-orthodox church fathers: The 7 books, 8 movies, Cursed Child, Pottermore, and everything from Fantastic Beasts including the new information in the trailer are all canon. If the books and the movies appear to contradict each other, your understanding is unclear. Maybe Harry walked into the forest twice.
Marcion: Fantastic Beasts isn’t canon. Cursed Child isn’t canon. The movies are not canon except where they provide a texturally harmonious expansion of the books. Pottermore and Twitter and interviews aren’t canon except where they support my main thesis. Those parts in the later books I don’t like are due to the nefarious influence of Steve Kloves. I will provide detailed textual arguments for my headcanons that contradict statements in material I consider noncanonical. I am a member of one or more character’s defense squads.
You know we’re in the dark timeline when Stephenie Meyer has minded her own damned business for years and J.K. Rowling keeps tumbling down the metaphorical steps of murdering her own universe and personal character in the public eye for everyone to see.
Like, if in 2008 you had told me Stephenie Meyer would quietly retire and stay in her lane instead of continuing to write weird Mormon fantasy with nothing but white characters and J.K. Rowling would be on Twitter spouting some shit like “THE GOBLET OF FIRE WAS ACTUALLY ONCE A TRANS WOMAN, I’VE BEEN SITTING ON THIS SINCE 1986!” I’d say you were a fucking liar.

i’m literally going to write out of spite a fantasy series focused on the relationship between two gay wizards in the 1920s who are driven apart due to one’s lust for power, ultimately leading to a final confrontation between the two to determine the fate of the world. and you know what??? jk can’t even sue me for it since she never actually incorporated it into her works, so boom i win.
JK Rowling only said Dumbledore was gay because there weren’t any risks, the books were finished. Now she’s decided they aren’t, there are risks again and she’s chosen the same spineless path she’s used to. She is no LGBTQ ally.
